Through the journey on the traces of the nomadic pastoralists’ seasonal migration routes, I aim to unwrite the pacification and fragmentation imposed on Çukurova’s landscapes and communities. This practice reclaims movement as a feminist infrastructural critique, offering an embodied, collaborative pathway to rethink histories, infrastructures, and ecologies. Our new research route follows Ulla Johansen's research migration with the Aydinlı tribe, Yaşar Kemal's Legend of the Binboğalar Mountains, goats, camels and water, the recordings of laments and rugs, and the kirmen and shuttle we found in our grandmother's chest, in the footsteps of nomadic pastoralists who were able to establish a rotational cycle with the ecology of Çukurova. Özellikle de son yüzyılda yüksek verim odaklı endüstriyel üretimler illişkilendikleri coğrafyaları hızla kaynaklaştırıyor, belli kalıplara sokuyor ve tüketiyor. Mahsul bu süreçlerde mahsul peşinde hasıl olanlara, göz ardı edilen izlere, kayıplara ve onlardan kalan boşluklarda ortaya çıkan ekolojilere bakmayı amaçlıyor. Bunu yaparken de toplulukların bilgeliğini çevre tarihi, kültürel coğrafya, etnoloji, mimarlık, ziraat ve enerji çalışmaları gibi farklı alanlardan uzmanların bilgisiyle bir araya getiren, yerel hafızayı arşivlerle buluşturarak hatırlayan yöntemler geliştirmeyi amaçlıyor. Mahsul’ün Heybesi projenin 2022-2023 yılları arasında Çukurova’ya odaklanarak gerçekleştirdiği arşiv ve saha çalışmalarında biriken malzemelerden bir seçki sunuyor. Çukurova’nın mahsul peşinde geçirdiği dönüşümü, bu dönüşümden etkilenen topluluklarını hatırlatan arşiv malzemelerine bölgede yapılan üreticilerle yapılan kayıtlar eşlik ediyor. Masadaki seçkide yer alan yün, pamuk ve elyaf bölgenin dönüşümünü mahsuller üzerinden hissetmeye davet ediyor. Yield Project is curious about, researches, records and shares rural modernisation practices in Çukurova and the environmental, social and cultural products of geographies outside the centre. Especially in the last century, high-yield oriented industrial productions rapidly resource, mould and consume the geographies they are associated with. Yield Project aims to look at what happens in these processes in pursuit of crops, the overlooked traces, losses and the ecologies that emerge in the gaps left by them. In doing so, it aims to develop methods that bring together the wisdom of communities with the knowledge of experts from different fields such as environmental history, cultural geography, ethnology, architecture, agriculture and energy studies, and to remember local memory by bringing together archives. Carriers of the Yields presents a selection of the materials accumulated in the archive and field studies carried out by the project focusing on Çukurova between 2022-2023. The archive materials, which remind the transformation of Çukurova in pursuit of crops and the communities affected by this transformation, are accompanied by recordings made with producers in the region. Readdressing relations with the world, Mahsul Vakaları [Yield Events], opens at Bayetav Sanat as an exhibition and a public program based on a series of multispecies collaborations and comraderies. Mahsul Vakaları traces back to the 1858 Ottoman Land Code some historians read as a turning point in the environmental history of Anatolia. It brings together various events that project the yields accelerating in the Mediterranean region, as well as their changes. It meshes the stories of the fruit gardens sharing the hillsides of the Aegean sea cost, fruits and insects in their oversea adventures, communities in the pursuit of a sustainable production, languages of companion species, tents building a nest between mountains, carrier bags carrying a world of memories, novels registering the hopes, concerns and dreams of Anatolia, the breeze blowing the cylinder of the windmill, sands waving where the sea and the land meets, foreign seeds whose shadows fall upon those sands, reeds linking two rivers, and the women defending the rights of the water that runs through the valley. Her book project, “Scaling the Region: Visuality, Infrastructure, and the Politics of Design in Cold War Turkey” traces the political, discursive, and cultural regimes that were reconstituted by U.S.-sponsored infrastructural design practices and objects, such as soil maps, multi-purpose dams, urban engineering plans, and port development programs. Sarıkeçililer üzerine yaptığı doktora çalışması kapsamında 2009-2011 yılları arasında konargöçer hayatı yaşayan Horzumlu ile gözlemlerine ve çalışmalarına dayanarak Akdeniz’de göçer yaşam pratiklerinde doğayla kurulan bağlar hakkında konuşacağız. Bu bağlar doğa ve çevreyle alışık olduğumuzun ötesinde bir birliktelik örneği teşkil ediyor. Göçer yaşam pratiklerinin anlaşılması özellikle de iklim ve ekoloji mücadelelerinde önemli bir kaynak sunuyor. Based on her doctoral research on the Sarıkeçililer community and her experience living a nomadic life between 2009 and 2011, Horzumlu will discuss the connections between nomadic life practices and nature in the Mediterranean. These connections present a unique bond with nature and the environment, surpassing our usual understanding. Understanding nomadic life practices provides a significant resource, particularly in the context of climate and ecological struggles. During the event, we will explore how nomadic life practices in the Mediterranean and its surrounding regions, some of which have transformed into intensive industrial farming areas, have maintained their ties from the past to the present. We will also hear from Horzumlu about the conditions under which nomadism can be sustained today.Dr. Ayşe Hilal Tuztaş Horzumlu studied History and Social Anthropology at Istanbul University. She completed her doctoral research titled "Settling, Moving, and Living: Space and Narrative in Sarıkeçili" at Yeditepe University's Institute of Social Sciences.
